The Clinical Study of Glycosaminoglycan-peptide complex(GP-C : Arumalon) in Osteoarthrosis of the Knee

Abstract
The aim of symptomatic treatment, either with drugs(antirheumatics and analgesics) or by physiotherapy, is in principle to return the decompensated and activated osteoarthrosis to a latent phase. Arumalon is a biological glycosaminoglycan-peptide complex from bovine cartilage and bone marrow. It consists of a defined glycosaminoglycan-peptide complex (GP-C) accompanied by smaller quantities of low molecular weight substances such as amino acids, carbohydrates, nucleoderivatives and salts which themselves are pharmacologically inert but which stabilize the GP-C in the ready to inject ampoule. It stimulates the specific synthetic functions of the chondrocytes and blocks the pathological enzymatic breakdown processes in the cartilage matrix. Double blind clinical studies have shown Arumalon to be effective and well-tolerated in the management of degenerative osteoarthritis of knee. The efficasy and safety of Arumalon was evaluated during 8 months from August, 1990 to March, 1991.
The results were obtained as follows
1) Male were 6 cases(30%) and female were 14 cases(70%). The mean age was 47.5 and the highest incidence was in 5th decade.
2) The clinical efficacy of Arumalon was "marked improved" in 4 patients (20%), "moderately improved" in 8 patients (40%), "slightly improved" in 3 patients (15%) and "unchanged" in 3 patients (15%) .
3) In 76% of the patients improvement was noted by the third weeks and four patients showed a very rapid onset of pain relief by one week after injection.
4) Intramuscular injection of Arumalon was well tolerated in most of cases. There were no significant adverse effect after injection.
In conclusion, Arumalon appears to be a safe and effective therapeutic agent in moderate osteoarhritis of the knee.
